Job Description:
Are you an experience SQL Server Database Consultant with specific experience leading a migration from SQL Server 2005 to 2008? If so, PPR Career would like to speak with you immediately! We are engaged in a high profile search for a proven client. We can not accept anyone without experience with this caliber of migration effort so PLEASE only serious inquiries need apply.

Position Description:
The Database (SQL Server) Consultant will be responsible for playing a key role in the conversion of MS SQL 2005 to MS SQL 2008 as well as managing merge replication for the company. Additional duties and responsibilities associated with the DBA role will be expected.

Requirements:
Candidate Requirements:
6+ years experience as a DBA in MS SQL 2005/2008 in a virtual/SAN environment.
Thorough knowledge of and experience with SQL replication techniques.
Bachelor degree (Computer Science preferred) backed up with a broad range of practical hands-on experience in a variety of disciplines.
Must be experienced with MS SQL migration and merge replication techniques.

Key Responsibilities and Duties:
Installation, configuration, upgrade, and migration –
o Using knowledge of the hardware prerequisites for an efficient database server, installs the database software and selects from various options in the product to configure it for the purpose it is being deployed.
o As new releases and patches are developed, decides which are appropriate and to install.
o Migrates data from the old servers to the new ones.
Data Design –
o Works with developers to understands the data and performance needs (backend and front end) and assists in developing logical designs.
o Refines logical designs into physical designs.
o Refines physical design into storage requirements.
Performance Monitoring and Tuning –
o Monitors the database servers on a regular basis to identify bottlenecks, and remedy them.
o Tunes the database servers through the interaction and management of server hardware capacity, operating system configuration, database software configuration, physical design (disk arrays, indexes, etc.), and application coding.
o Understands which monitoring tools are available at each of these levels and how to use them to tune the system.
o Works with developers to proactively tune by designing performance into an application from the start, rather than waiting for problems to occur and fixing them.
Troubleshooting –
o Knows how to quickly ascertain the problem, and to correct it without losing data or making the situation worse.
Maintaining High Availability –
o Understands which types of maintenance operations can be done online (with the database available to users) and which must be scheduled for a maintenance "window" when the database may be shut down.
o Plans for redundant hardware and/or software components, so that when one fails, others will keep the total system available to its users using techniques like online backups, clustering, replication, and standby databases to ensure higher availability.
Maintaining Scalability of Large Databases –
o Understands techniques like table partitioning, federated databases, and replication to enable a database to scale to large sizes while still being manageable.
